Step 1: Identify When Your Cal 1 Card Was Issued

Not Sure When Your Cal 1 Card Was Issued?
You can check by looking at the card key number on the back of your Cal 1 Card.

If your card key number does not start with a 3
→ Your card was issued before July 2024 -
If your card key number does start with a 3
→ Your card was issued after July 2024
Cards Issued Before July 2024
Use the following method:

Tap the left side of your card

Hold the card with your photo facing toward you

Tap and hold briefly (1–2 seconds)
This method works consistently for older Cal 1 Cards.
Cards Issued After July 2024
Newer Cal 1 Cards may work differently depending on the specific card reader. There is no visible indicator to identify which method a reader prefers, so please try the following in order.
Method 1 (Try First)

Tap the right side of your card

Hold the card with your photo facing toward you

Tap and hold briefly (1–2 seconds)
Method 2 (If Method 1 Does Not Work)

Rotate your card horizontally

Hold the card with your photo facing up

Tap the short edge of the card against the reader

Hold steady for 1–2 seconds
Helpful Tips

Hold your card steady—quick taps may not register

Avoid holding other cards or your phone near the reader

If the reader does not beep or flash, slightly adjust the card position and try again
